Maine man drowns saving his children from rip current in South Florida Beach
- On Wednesday, April 1, 46-year-old Ryan Jennings of North Yarmouth, Maine, died at Juno Beach, Florida, after rescuing two of his children from a rip current. Witnesses said he immediately entered the water, successfully bringing them to safety before succumbing.
- While visiting Ryan's parents in south Florida, the family encountered dangerous currents at an unguarded beach. The area near Juno Beach has seen more than a half dozen rip current drownings in the last two years, according to published reports.
- Emily Jennings described her husband as a "devoted father" who instinctively threw his 12-year-old son toward shore and hoisted his 9-year-old daughter above his head. The couple, expecting their fourth child, had three children at the time.
- A GoFundMe campaign created to support the family has raised more than $100,000 as of Saturday. Organizers noted Emily is "now faced with the challenge of caring for her three children and rebuilding her life."
- Officials emphasize the "importance of swimming at guarded beaches where trained lifeguards can identify hazardous conditions" to prevent future tragedies. Rip currents account for 80% of beach rescues annually, often proving deadly for those unaware of proper escape techniques.
