‘A year can change a lot of things’: Chicago White Sox announce Shane Smith as their opening-day starter

Shane Smith, a Rule 5 draft pick and 2025 All-Star, will start Opening Day against Milwaukee, marking his first game back at his former organization, manager Will Venable said.

  • On Sunday, the White Sox announced Shane Smith will start on March 26 against the Brewers at American Family Field.
  • Based on last year's production and his All-Star nod, Smith's rookie stat line of 7-8 with a 3.81 ERA in 29 starts led to his opening day start, Venable said.
  • He has made two spring starts and is slated to start again Tuesday in Mesa, with only two Cactus League appearances and none since Feb. 27.
  • Venable said the rest of the White Sox rotation will be named shortly, with Davis Martin, Sean Burke, Anthony Kay, and Sean Newcomb lining up behind Smith.
  • His ascent — from a Rule 5 draft in December 2024 to a 2025 All-Star — marks a rare success, only Dan Uggla has achieved this.
