Heavy rain from tropical storm raises flood risks in the Tokyo region
Authorities issued evacuation advisories for more than 800,000 people as Jangmi knocked out power, grounded flights and disrupted schools and transport.
On Wednesday, Tropical Storm Jangmi moved into the heavily populated Tokyo region, disrupting public transport and causing power outages affecting more than 5,000 homes according to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings.
A severe tropical storm battered southwestern Japan on Tuesday, injuring 15 people and triggering evacuation advisories for more than 800,000 residents in Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures on Kyushu.
Jangmi made landfall in Wakayama with 126 kph winds before moving inland and weakening, dumping 50 centimeters of rain in the Owase area while sustaining 90 kph winds near Shima city.
Top government spokesman Minoru Kihara urged residents to "pay close attention to evacuation information," as authorities issued highest-level flood warnings for areas near the Zenpukuji River in downtown Tokyo.
The Japan Meteorological Agency expects up to 20 centimeters of rain through Thursday morning in areas including Tokyo, with residents remaining at risk of flooding and landslides.
