The severely and systematically abused girl (6) from Stadskanaal spent four nights in hospital with signs of neglect, while she was under the supervision of the William Schrikker Foundation (WSS). This is evident from answers to questions to the Council for Child Protection (RvdK) and documents from the court.
Over the past few days, the Netherlands followed the news with horror regarding the two young children from Stadskanaal who were allegedly severely abused by their own mothers. It is not only the horrific details that raise questions, but also the recurring nature of these types of cases.
The two severely abused children in Stadskanaal had been known to care agencies for some time. Although, according to Veilig Thuis, help was provided, the abuse was able to continue for months. Once again, the question arises as to how youth care could fail to such an extent.
The girl who was placed in a coma after abuse in Stadskanaal needed protection. Despite previous warnings, child welfare services could not prevent this. Why do children with serious problems wait for help that should be available?
The child abuse case in Stadskanaal is not the first example. DVHN regularly writes about abuses in youth care. These do not come out of nowhere; the inspectorates have been warning for years in alarming language that child protection is structurally failing.
Care agencies had received signals regarding an unsafe home situation within the problem families in Stadskanaal for at least fifteen months. It has now emerged that a report and a specific recommendation had even been issued and handed over to ‘involved partners’ previously. This did not lead to immediate removal from the home. An investigation by the Inspectorate must determine what actually happened.
