Steve Hilton Faces Steep Odds in Bid for California Governor After 20-Year GOP Drought
Autumn polling shows Hilton trailing Xavier Becerra 60% to 38% after a televised debate and Trump’s endorsement failed to close the gap.
Republican Steve Hilton currently trails Democrat Xavier Becerra in California's gubernatorial race, with polling showing Becerra leading 60% to 38%. Hilton, endorsed by President Donald Trump, faces a daunting challenge in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by 4.6 million voters.
No Republican has won a statewide office in California for two decades, leaving Hilton to contend with a Democratic-controlled legislature and a registration margin approaching 2-to-1. Political analyst Lanhee Chen said Hilton "has to turn it into a referendum on one-party governance."
During Wednesday's debate, Hilton promoted his "Save With Steve" platform, proposing to eliminate state income taxes on the first $150,000 in earnings and reduce gas prices to $3 a gallon. These proposals aim to address voter frustration with high living costs.
Challenging Hilton's immigration stance during the debate, Becerra told him: "You seem to welcome immigrants who look like you and deport immigrants who look like me." The Democrat maintains a low-key campaign, arguing Hilton would implement a conservative agenda in California.
As mail ballots arrive in early October, Hilton struggles against a 72% disapproval rating for Trump in recent polls. While Hilton maintains the race is winnable, the president's low standing outside his conservative base complicates his path to victory in the Golden State.
