A record-breaking race and Catholic blessing highlight the role of faith for Kenyan runners
Officials said the 31-year-old Kenyan finished in 1:59:30, but the event was not considered an official record because the route was built to help him.
Sabastian Sawe became the first human to run the 26.2-mile distance in under two hours in an official marathon, finishing on April 26 in a record 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds.
Before the race, Sawe requested prayers at his home church, the Holy Family Catholic Church, part of the Josephine Bakhita Lower Moiben Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret. Rev. Pius Tuwei blessed him.
Brother Colm, an Irish missionary and athletics coach, said he was inspired by the blessings, but Connell cautioned it had little to do with his victory, telling RNS.
Patrick Makau Musyoki, a former world marathon record holder, said for Christian athletes, faith in Jesus Christ drives them and God gives the talent they must develop through training.
Eliud Kipchoge previously broke the two-hour barrier in a 2019 INEOS Challenge event in Vienna, but that record was not considered official because the route was constructed to help him achieve it.
