Montreal-Ottawa chosen as first leg of high-speed rail project
The 200-km Montreal–Ottawa rail segment is the first phase of a $60–$90 billion network aiming to cut travel times and cross provincial borders, officials said.
- This morning, Federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the inaugural high-speed segment linking Montreal and Ottawa will include a stop in Laval, Que., with Martin Imbleau, CEO of Alto.
- Launched last February by the Trudeau government, the project targets the 200‑kilometre Montreal–Ottawa stretch as the shortest, flattest section and costs $60 billion to $90 billion.
- Construction has been awarded to the Cadence consortium, which includes CDPQ Infra, AtkinsRéalis, Air Canada and SNCF Voyageurs, with sources saying each segment could take seven to eight years to build.
- Public consultations to set the exact route begin in January, groundbreaking is scheduled for 2029, and it remains unclear when Via Rail passengers will board.
- The network aims to cut Montreal–Toronto travel to three hours and Montreal–Quebec City to 90 minutes, following dozens of Via Rail passengers stranded overnight.
