'A Long Journey': Young, Upstart Canadiens Off to East Final After Rebuild
Montreal’s rebuild has produced a 106-point season and a young core led by Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield.
The Montreal Canadiens clinched a spot in the Eastern Conference final on Monday night, defeating the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 in overtime to secure a seven-game series victory in Western New York.
Hiring Jeff Gorton to lead hockey operations in November 2021 started the rebuilding process, which continued with the additions of general manager Kent Hughes and head coach Martin St. Louis in February 2022.
The squad is the youngest to reach the third round since 1993 with an average age of 25.8 years, with St. Louis stating, "It's easy to just use the age as a crutch."
Captain Nick Suzuki reflected on the team's evolution from the Stanley Cup final to last place, saying, "It's been a long journey." Forward Alex Newhook continues delivering clutch playoff performances.
Montreal will face the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final, with the series opener scheduled for Thursday in Raleigh, N.C., as the young team pursues deeper playoff success.
