Picasso etching stolen from Milwaukee art gallery in 2018 found by landlord in vacant apartment
The 1949 aquatint, missing for eight years, was turned over to police after a landlord invited an antiques dealer to inspect a messy apartment.
- On August 4, Milwaukee landlord Tim Dertz discovered a stolen Pablo Picasso print titled "Torero" while cleaning a vacant apartment. He handed the artwork to police, who contacted gallery owner Bill DeLind.
- Stolen in February 2018, the 1949 aquatint print vanished from DeLind Fine Art Appraisals, remaining a mystery for eight years. DeLind had previously offered a $10,000 reward for its recovery.
- Dertz verified the artwork's identity with antiques dealer Chad Strack after finding it dusty and hanging on a wall. The piece, one of 30 known to exist, is valued between $35,000 and $50,000.
- DeLind was overwhelmed upon being reunited with the etching, which still bore his gallery's sticker from 2018. The Milwaukee Police Department commended Dertz for doing "the right thing" by turning in the piece.
- The Milwaukee Police Department noted the statute of limitations for property crimes is generally six years, though the case remains under investigation. DeLind hopes insurers will allow him to display the print in his gallery for a month or two.
