Strong at Every Age: How Women Can Help Combat Muscle Loss
The survey found 73% of U.S. women were unaware of sarcopenia, while experts said muscle loss can begin in the 30s.
A recent survey commissioned by Viactiv reveals that 73% of women in the United States are unaware of sarcopenia, or age-related muscle loss, despite 70% expressing concern about muscle decline.
According to the International Journal of Women's Health, muscle loss often begins between ages 30 and 35, yet 54% of women remain unsure how to protect their muscle health as they age.
While 58% of women engage in walking and cardio exercise, only 34% report performing strength training, which experts identify as crucial for preserving muscle mass.
Dr. Tania Elliott, a dual board-certified physician in internal medicine, noted that women receive "mixed messages" about muscle health, emphasizing that maintaining strength requires a complete approach starting in one's 30s.
To support healthy aging, experts recommend incorporating high-quality protein and strength training at least twice weekly, while some women may consider supplements like CoQ10 to aid energy production and muscle function.
