A car-bomb attack targets southwest Colombia a day after conservative president takes office
The army blamed dissident FARC groups and said soldiers were searching the area as traffic was restored after the blast.
- A car bomb exploded at a toll plaza on the Pan-American Highway in southwestern Colombia on Saturday, injuring two security guards. The army reported the vehicle was abandoned by an individual who fled on a motorcycle.
- The army alleged that dissident groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces carried out the attack. These groups rejected the peace agreement signed a decade ago between the Colombian government and the FARC.
- During his inaugural speech in Cali on Friday, the 48-year-old President Abelardo warned illegal groups they must submit to the rule of law or confront security forces. The explosion occurred one day after his swearing-in ceremony.
- Minister of Transportation Elsa Noguera condemned the attack, stating "Colombia will not kneel before violence." President Abelardo announced the transfer of 117 prisoners to maximum-security prisons to "regain permanent control of the prisons."
- His term begins amid a polarized political climate, as President Abelardo has rejected dialogue with armed groups promoted by predecessor Gustavo Petro. Petro refused to acknowledge the election victory and alleged fraud despite international observer support.
