Trump Fed pick Kevin Warsh clears key Senate hurdle, teeing up final vote
The 13-11 party-line vote sends Warsh to the full Senate as Democrats warn he would advance Trump’s push for lower rates.
- On Wednesday, the Senate Banking Committee voted 13-11 along party lines to advance Kevin Warsh's nomination to Federal Reserve chair, sending his confirmation to the full Senate.
- Senator Thom Tillis dropped his opposition after the Department of Justice closed its criminal investigation into Fed Chair Jerome Powell last week, which Tillis called a 'serious threat to the Fed's independence.'
- During his confirmation hearing last week, Warsh vowed to remain 'strictly independent' while promising 'regime change' at the central bank, specifically targeting its $6.7 trillion balance sheet.
- Senate Democrats, including Elizabeth Warren, opposed the nomination, alleging Warsh would be a 'sock puppet' for President Donald Trump seeking to seize control of monetary policy.
- Confirmation in the full Senate could occur before May 15, 2026, when Powell's term as chair ends, potentially positioning Warsh to lead the central bank's June policy meeting.
