Nine WWII Service Medals Presented to Local Family of Late Veteran
Milford Browning’s family received his Bronze Star and World War II Victory Medal as local officials honored his posthumous military service.
U.S. Rep. Glenn "GT" Thompson presented nine World War II service medals, including the Bronze Star Medal, to the family of the late Milford Browning during a ceremony in Williamsport.
Browning fought with the 94th Infantry Division through campaigns in Northern France, the Rhineland, and the Ardennes, spending 209 consecutive days in combat in heavy weapons roles supporting front-line infantry.
Recounting her father's grueling experience, daughter Susan Browning said, "They were cold, they were hungry, they were being bombarded left and right," and noted the unit was "dug in like ticks."
Many of Browning's official service records were destroyed in the 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center, yet his family has continued researching to piece together his military history.
Attendees included Lycoming County Commissioners Scott Metzger, Marc Sortman, and Mark Mussina, honoring a veteran who enlisted in October 1941, before the United States formally entered World War II.
