Testimony Focuses on Matthew Farwell's Behavior in Days Before Sandra Birchmore Found Dead
James Fitton said Farwell became visibly upset after a caller raised the alleged affair, as prosecutors argue he feared exposure of a years-long relationship.
On Tuesday, former Stoughton police dispatcher James Fitton testified that he confronted Matthew Farwell about a call alleging an affair with Sandra Birchmore, and Farwell reacted with visible anger, ordering him to "never talk about this again."
Prosecutors allege Farwell, then 35, initiated a sexual relationship with 15-year-old Birchmore in 2012, later killing her in February 2021 after she told him she was pregnant and threatened to expose their affair.
Colleagues testified Farwell appeared stressed and agitated in early 2021, frequently taking private phone calls; Detective Sandra Barrett said he told her he needed to put "crazy back in the bag" regarding a woman threatening to expose his infidelity.
While the defense argues Birchmore died by suicide, prosecutors contend Farwell staged her death to cover his tracks; The Norfolk District Attorney's office ruled her death "undetermined" after initially classifying it as suicide.
An internal affairs investigation found that Farwell, his twin brother William, and Deputy Chief Robert Devine engaged in "inappropriate relationships" with Birchmore, with prosecutors arguing Farwell killed the 23-year-old to prevent his life from falling apart.
