By the end of the second world conflict, and until 1948, nearly one million German prisoners of war were detained in France to contribute physically to the reconstruction of the country. 37,000 of them were sent to five open detention camps in Alsace where they were used for agricultural and industrial work but also for the demining of the region, as in Ingwiller.
