BISP Chief Promises Justice, Aid for Rahim Yar Khan Families

At least seven women died and 75 were injured when a roof collapsed under overcrowding at a BISP payment site, officials said compensation is being provided to victims' families.

  • On Monday, the roof at Sajjad Karyana Store in Chak 123-P Tibba collapsed, killing at least seven women after more than 200 had gathered outside the designated BISP retailer.
  • Eyewitnesses said the roof, built with weak T-iron and girders, collapsed after the retailer had not started payments despite having devices and directed many women to wait on the shop's first floor.
  • At Sheikh Zayed Hospital, the BISP chairperson said women with minor injuries had been discharged while 17 women suffered major injuries and one remained in serious condition.
  • During a visit to Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Rubina Khalid, Benazir Income Support Programme chairperson, said disbursement was "outsourced" to banks and announced cheques of Rs1 million for victims' heirs and Rs300,000 for injured women.
  • Khalid said yesterday’s payment was the last instalment under the old system, and from the next quarter payments will be made under the new digital wallet system by Benazir Income Support Programme.
