Chelsea confirm signing of Emi Martinez from Aston Villa
Chelsea signed the 33-year-old goalkeeper on a three-year deal after intermediaries offered him to the club and his move from Juventus collapsed.
On Sunday, August 30, 2026, Chelsea signed Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5 million on a three-year contract, bolstering their goalkeeping depth.
Martinez's arrival follows a collapsed Juventus deal earlier this month, ending his six-year tenure at Villa; Chelsea pursued the signing after criticism of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez's performance against Fulham.
Pledging to give "100 per cent every game, every training session," Martinez said, "I want to be successful here," and was registered by Friday's 12pm BST deadline for immediate selection.
Making his debut against Brighton on Sunday, Martinez helped Chelsea secure a 4-3 victory at Stamford Bridge while replacing Sanchez and offering "calmness" to the defense.
Martinez now positions himself as Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper under manager Xabi Alonso as the club aims to stabilize their defense and challenge for the Premier League title this season.
"I am pure passion and I play with my heart," he said. I will give 100% in each game, in each training, so that the club, my colleagues and fans feel proud," said the albiceleste goalkeeper
