70-year-old Arizona landscaper left unconscious after bee swarm attack
Benjamin Montgomery spent nearly a week in the hospital after hundreds of bees attacked him while he cleared weeds, and friends are raising money for his care.
- On April 11, a 70-year-old landscaper named Benjamin Montgomery was attacked by a swarm of bees while clearing weeds near 7th Street and Thomas Road in Arizona.
- Evan Henderson with Busy Bee Pest Solutions said bees spent the warm winter breeding and became active earlier than usual this spring. "Theyve been so nasty and its because of all the over-brooding," Henderson said.
- Jason Sawyer, Montgomery's assistant, called 911 after finding him unconscious and covered in bees. Phoenix firefighters hosed him down and transported him to the hospital, where doctors removed dozens of stingers from his body.
- Montgomery spent nearly a week in the hospital to have stingers removed from his face, arms, and legs. He returned to work despite continuing to experience pain and swelling from the attack.
- Friends are raising money to help Montgomery pay for medical expenses, while Henderson advises that the best defense during a bee swarm is "isolation, getting to a room, a car, a garage, to where you can kind of nip it in the bud.
