A magnitude 6.6 earthquake strikes off the coast of Taiwan
The 6.6 magnitude quake was the second major tremor in days and caused buildings to sway in Taipei with no immediate casualties, officials said.
- A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Taiwan's northeast coast on Saturday at 11:05 p.m. local time, about 32 kilometers from Yilan, the USGS reported.
- Because Taiwan sits on the edge of two tectonic plates in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the U.S. Geological Survey calls it highly seismically active and agencies reported the quake at 70–73 kilometres deep.
- Tremors were felt across the island, including in Taipei where buildings shook, and local television showed hanging TVs swaying while a Yilan County resident described vertical then horizontal shaking.
- The Yilan County Fire Bureau told AFP there were no immediate reports of casualties or widespread damage, and William Lai Ching-te, Taiwanese President, urged residents to be alert for aftershocks.
- As the island experienced a second major shock within days, the USGS said this follows the 6.0-magnitude tremor on Wednesday and the April 2024 7.4-magnitude earthquake killing 17 near Hualien city.
