South Korea’s military says North Korea fired a projectile toward the sea

  • On Monday, North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles from near Pyongyang, with one projectile traveling more than 900 km, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.
  • The launches follow South Korean President Lee Jae Myung overseeing the country's first hypersonic glide vehicle test last week. Pyongyang, which tested a hypersonic weapon on Oct. 3, described the South's activities as provocation.
  • Japan's Ministry of Defense detected two missiles within 20 minutes of each other; one reached about 70 km in altitude and flew over 910 km. Projectiles landed "near the east coast of North Korea or in the Sea of Japan."
  • South Korea's National Security Office condemned the launches as violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions. A military spokesperson characterized the activity as "a show of force" in response to Seoul's earlier hypersonic test.
  • Pyongyang has conducted missile tests on more than 10 occasions in 2026, including four in the last month. North Korea has remained under United Nations sanctions since 2006 while continuing weapons development.
