Pete Buttigieg returns to South Carolina as he weighs another White House run
Buttigieg highlighted his Biden administration record and sought support from Black Democrats as he weighs a 2028 presidential bid.
Returning to South Carolina this weekend, Buttigieg sought to reconnect with Black voters as he mulls a potential 2028 presidential run in a state now serving as the first Democratic primary contest.
Unlike his 2020 performance six years ago when he struggled to engage Black voters, this weekend's warm reception marked a markedly different reception in the state now positioned as first in the 2028 Democratic primary.
At an NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner, Buttigieg highlighted his Cabinet work, including a $22.7 million federal grant for the Railroad Corner project in Orangeburg, and told more than 200 attendees the country is in "big trouble."
Jaime Harrison, a former Democratic National Committee chair, called the visit a "good start," but emphasized that Buttigieg and other 2028 candidates face a long road ahead to prove themselves to state voters.
As the 2028 field takes shape, other contenders including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear have also visited South Carolina, though Buttigieg told reporters he remains "totally focused on 2026" for now.
