Democratic US states sue to challenge Trump's latest tariffs
The states say the duties were rushed through flawed investigations and will raise costs for consumers and businesses nationwide.
- On Monday, a coalition of 25 Democratic-led states sued the Trump administration in the U.S. Court of International Trade, challenging new 10% and 12.5% tariffs on goods from 60 trading partners.
- These duties replace previous tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court, which ruled the administration's earlier use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act unlawful; President Trump subsequently invoked Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
- Covering 99.4% of U.S. imports and more than 80 countries, the tariffs affect nearly every U.S. trading partner. A Federal Reserve Bank analysis found American consumers and businesses paid nearly 90 percent of tariff costs in 2025.
- "The onslaught of new tariffs increases the difficulty for companies to plan their business," said Julie Hughes, president of the United States Fashion Industry Association . Oregon Attorney-General Dan Rayfield noted the coalition is fighting to protect businesses and working families.
