Toyota to Sell U.S.-Made Cars in Japan, Including Tundra, From 2026
Toyota will export three U.S.-built models to Japan from 2026 to meet diverse customer needs and support improved Japan-U.S. trade relations, the company said.
- On Friday, Toyota Motor confirmed it will start importing to Japan next year three models it builds in America: the Camry sedan, Highlander sport utility vehicle and Tundra pickup truck.
- By using a new system being considered by Japan's transport ministry, Toyota will sell three U.S.-built models in Japan without extra testing following months of trade negotiations and President Donald Trump's comments last month.
- The Camry and Highlander will come from Kentucky and Indiana and the Tundra from Texas, with Japan’s left-hand-drive vehicle allowance reducing conversion needs.
- Toyota says the move will help reduce the U.S. trade deficit and improve bilateral ties, meeting diverse customer needs after its $10 billion investment in the United States last month.
- Honda is conducting a market survey to decide which U.S. models to ship, and Nissan will assess demand and profitability while the Camry's reintroduction may shift Japan market availability.
