US officially doubles last year’s measles numbers

Health experts say falling vaccination coverage and misinformation are helping fuel the surge, as the CDC reports 479 hospitalizations and three confirmed deaths.

  • The US CDC reported 4,588 measles cases nationwide as of October 22, up 178 from the previous week, more than doubling last year's 2,289 total cases.
  • Pennsylvania reported 1,317 measles cases as of October 21 with 251 hospitalizations; children and teenagers aged 5 to 19 constitute 42% of cases, while adults aged 20 and older account for 41%.
  • Dr. Todd Ellerin of South Shore Health noted that measles is the world's most contagious virus, allowing rapid spread through small vaccination gaps, particularly in under-vaccinated communities.
  • Ellerin pointed to what he called "epidemics of mistrust" and misinformation as public health challenges, criticizing disproven links between the MMR vaccine and autism.
  • "In 2026, measles should be in our history books, not our hospitals," Ellerin said, urging the CDC to strengthen public health coordination and communication to prevent further spread.
