5-year average in hectares burned doubled to start season in Kamloops Fire Centre

Fire officials said the region’s 47 blazes and 868 hectares burned by mid-May far exceeded five-year averages.

  • Between April 1 and May 12, the Kamloops Fire Centre recorded 47 wildfires burning 868 hectares, marking a significant early-season surge in fire activity across the region.
  • These totals exceed the five-year average of 39 wildfires and 417 hectares burned, and surpass the 10-year average of 31 fires and 227 hectares, indicating accelerated fire season onset.
  • Fire Information Officer Cali Nessman noted that while lightning causes about 60 per cent of wildfires, spring blazes are more frequently human-caused through vehicle use, industrial activities, and arson.
  • The region currently faces moderate to high fire danger ratings, with Nessman describing the season as having a 'hot start' requiring day-by-day management.
  • Residents can monitor current wildfire conditions, prohibitions, and evacuation information through the Wildfire Dashboard smartphone app for real-time situational awareness.
