5 Family Members Dead, 2 Critically Injured in Shooting, Authorities Say
Illinois State Police said two 16-year-old suspects were taken into custody after five family members were killed and two others were critically injured.
On Sunday, Illinois State Police arrested two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, following a 'targeted mass shooting' in East St. Louis, Illinois, that left five family members dead and two others seriously injured.
The violence spanned three locations: Samuel Gompers Homes on North 6th Street, 39th and Summit streets, and Jones Park. Deceased victims were identified as Cherie L. May, Devin D. May, Patricia A. May, Quentin L. Thompson, and Shania W. Thompson.
Authorities confirmed all victims were related, and investigators believe at least one suspect shared a family connection with the victims. State police have not yet filed formal charges.
Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly called the incident 'evil,' stating "It's evil, but it will not keep this city down." Two survivors remain in critical condition at a St. Louis, Missouri hospital.
Kelly noted that local law enforcement officers have worked for years to reduce crime rates in East St. Louis. The investigation remains active as authorities process evidence.
