Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms Elected Georgia Governor, Nation's First Black Woman Governor
Bottoms defeated billionaire Rick Jackson after a close race, becoming Georgia’s first woman governor and first Black woman elected governor in any state.
On Tuesday, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia's governor's race, defeating Republican Rick Jackson and becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state. Her victory ends 24 years of Republican control of the office.
Bottoms overcame a substantial spending gap; Jackson spent more than $200 million of his own fortune on the campaign. The win flips the executive office for the first time since 1998, ending Republican control after two decades.
During her campaign, Bottoms prioritized Medicaid expansion, abortion access, and data center regulations. She contrasted these with Jackson's platform emphasizing tax cuts and reduced government spending, framing the race as a choice between competing visions.
Jackson told supporters, "Tonight, the voters spoke... and I respect their decision." The Republican Party of Georgia stated it would respect the outcome, pledging to develop new leaders and strengthen local parties.
Bottoms' victory provides Democrats a major lift in a key battleground, confirming a political shift in a state long favoring Republicans at the gubernatorial level. Analysts attribute the transformation to metro area growth reshaping Georgia's electorate.
