Age poverty in Germany: number of persons receiving basic insurance continues to rise

In Germany, the number of basic protection recipients is increasing. According to the Federal Statistical Office, this is due to a change in the standard rates – and the increased number of recipients among Ukrainian refugees.

More than 700,000 people over 65 receive basic security benefits – seven percent more than in the previous year. A population group in particular is responsible for the increase.

Around 1.26 million people received basic old-age security and reduced earning capacity benefits in December 2024. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced on Friday, this was around 49,000, or 4.1 percent, more than in December 2023.
