4 killed in latest US strike on alleged drug boat in Eastern Pacific: Hegseth
The strike is the 14th in a nearly two-month campaign that has killed at least 62 people targeting narco-trafficking vessels in international waters, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said.
- On Wednesday, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the U.S. military struck an alleged drug-trafficking boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.
- Directed by President Donald Trump, the operation targeted a vessel linked to a designated terrorist organization as part of the campaign that began in early September with at least 14 attacks.
- Hegseth said in a statement that `This vessel, like all the others, was known by our intelligence to be involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and carrying narcotics` and the strike occurred in international waters with no U.S. forces harmed.
- With Wednesday’s operation, U.S. officials say the campaign has killed at least 61 people in 15 confirmed U.S. strikes, sparking debate in the U.S. Congress over war powers and GOP-only briefings Democrats say excluded them.
- The strikes coincide with a major U.S. military buildup in the region as United Nations experts last month described the killings as "extrajudicial executions" and Miroslav Jenca urged compliance with international law this month.
