Early Works Underway on $381 Million Muswellbrook Bypass
Shortlisted contractors have moved to tender as early works continue on a $381 million bypass designed to remove 2,500 heavy vehicles a day from Muswellbrook.
- Transport for NSW progressed shortlisted applicants to the request for tender stage for the $381 million Muswellbrook Bypass. Early works including utility relocations and dynamic compaction continue ahead of major construction in 2027.
- Around 20,000 vehicles travel through Muswellbrook's town center daily, with heavy vehicles accounting for about 13 per cent of traffic. NSW Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison noted the bypass will divert 2,500 trucks, improving safety for local streets.
- Design refinements feature a safer intersection at Milpera Drive, improved northern and southern connections, and a dedicated U-turn facility. Crews completed foundation work using a 25-tonne weight to strengthen the alignment across a backfilled open-cut mine.
- The Australian government is investing $304.8 million and the NSW government $76.2 million into the upgrade. Wybong Road and Bengalla Link Road were re-categorized as state roads, recognizing their strategic importance to the regional freight network.
- Major construction is expected to start in 2027, with the project supporting 720 jobs during the build phase. Environmental crews are monitoring the threatened Hunter Valley Delma, a legless lizard endemic to the region, to guide mitigation measures.
