30 years ago, Connie Hilbert vanished without a trace
Investigators concluded Hilbert likely crashed into the river, but searches found no trace of her and the case remains open after 30 years.
On November 8, 1996, Connie Hilbert disappeared while driving home along Highway 21 after leaving a pool tournament at a Valley City truck stop around 2 a.m.
Five days after the disappearance, Ransom County Sheriff Conrad Steinhaus located Hilbert's white pickup truck submerged beneath the ice of the Sheyenne River, heavily damaged with a smashed windshield.
Barnes County Sheriff Rheinhold Weber and Sargent County Sheriff Travis Paeper concluded the incident was an accident, with divers conducting a 200-plus foot bank-to-bank search finding no evidence of foul play.
Diane Weber, now 80, described the uncertainty as one of the "most horrible things" she endured, spending about 10 years to find peace with her sister's disappearance.
Technically, the case remains unsolved and open, though after 30 years the chances of finding new clues are nearly impossible and authorities have ceased active searches.
