3 local students named National Merit semifinalists
Recognized for top PSAT scores, these students join over 16,000 semifinalists nationwide vying for 6,700 scholarships totaling $24 million.
- On Wednesday, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced more than 16,000 high school seniors as semifinalists for the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, representing less than 1% of U.S. seniors.
- Students qualified based on their performance on the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which more than 1.2 million juniors at about 20,000 high schools took to enter the competition.
- To advance to finalist standing, semifinalists must submit a detailed application including their academic record and leadership activities; about 95 percent are expected to attain finalist status.
- Finalists will compete for about 6,700 scholarships worth a combined $24 million, with winners to be announced in spring 2027.
- Wantagh High School Principal Paul Guzzone said the recognition "doesnt just reflect their intelligence; its a representation of how hard they have worked to get here." The achievement reflects student dedication and effort.
