25 must-visit destinations for 2027, according to National Geographic
The annual list highlights new openings, major anniversaries and easier access to remote places, including a $38 million museum upgrade in Baltimore, officials said.
On Tuesday, National Geographic released its 'Best of the World 2027' list, featuring 25 curated destinations selected by global editors and travel experts. The collection ranges from Baltimore's 200-year railroad history to Normandy's 1,000-year anniversary celebration.
National Geographic editor-in-chief Nathan Lump said the annual list is narrowed from hundreds of nominations through a vetting process. The team seeks locations offering a "good range of geographies" and meaningful, enriching experiences for travelers.
Selected locations include Luxor, Egypt, where a solar eclipse will cast "six minutes of daytime twilight," and Peru's ancient Kuélap site. Audiences voted Santa Catalina Island the "Readers' Choice" winner, making it the 26th destination on the list.
Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, is the only United Kingdom destination on the list. Local officials hope the accolade—highlighting the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory and the 2027 Tour de France—will strengthen the region's visitor economy.
National Geographic editors factored sustainability into selections to provide alternatives to overcrowded destinations. Regional leaders aim to leverage this global spotlight to turn temporary recognition into lasting benefits for local communities throughout the year.
