24-Year-Old Runner Dies After Collapsing During Oregon Marathon
His wife said he trained for months and was healthy, and doctors told her he went into cardiac arrest after collapsing around mile 20.
On Oct 04, 24-year-old youth pastor Treyton "Trey" Lara died after suffering cardiac arrest while running the 26.2-mile Portland Marathon in Oregon.
Lara, a leader within the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, recently transitioned from Eastside Church to a role stewarding young leaders. His parents, Omar and Misty Lara, serve as associate district supervisors for the Northwest District.
Before collapsing near mile 20, Lara appeared healthy, with wife Audrey Shin-Lara noting he trained for months. She recalled, "He ran over and was able to smile."
A GoFundMe campaign launched by Kari Ahearn has raised $57,535 to support the family. Ahearn recalled that Lara, who was "just shy of his 25th birthday," possessed an "unmatched sense of humor."
Beyond his pastoral work, Lara helped open Camp Genesis this summer. His faith in the Kingdom of God was his "defining feature," and Audrey Shin-Lara remembered him as the "love of my life.
