A 21-year-old protester suffered permanent blindness after a less-lethal round struck his face at close range during a protest against immigration enforcement, officials said.
- Britain Rodriguez, 31, reported losing vision in his left eye after federal officers shot him with a less-lethal projectile during a protest in Santa Ana, California, on January 9.
- Kaden Rummler, 21, also suffered eye damage from a projectile at the same protest and underwent surgery after his injury.
- Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security, claimed the protesters were violent and stated that a mob of about 60 rioters threw rocks, bottles, and fireworks at law enforcement officers.
- Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Benjamin Vazquez criticized the federal agents' actions, stating they were deplorable and dangerous, calling the use of projectiles into people's faces potentially lethal.
