$200 deposit leads to double scam for Pennsylvania woman
Donna Shaak says a fake Facebook support call led her to share Social Security and account details for 13 accounts.
A Pennsylvania woman lost a $200 deposit on Facebook Marketplace after attempting to purchase a small Kubota tractor; the seller stopped communicating and disappeared shortly after the transaction.
Shaak sent the deposit to a seller who appeared connected to her family members on Facebook. When the seller vanished, she searched Google for a Facebook customer service number and called it, unaware it was fake.
Claiming to be with Facebook, the caller convinced Shaak to provide her Social Security number and details for 13 accounts. "He kept repeating, I'm going to help you," Shaak said, as the caller promised to protect her information.
Instead of canceling her cards, the scammer stole information from all 13 accounts. Shaak now waits for replacement cards as financial damage compounds across her compromised accounts.
Consumer investigator Brian Roche explained Shaak fell victim to two separate scams: first on Facebook Marketplace, then through a fake customer service number. Roche advised buyers to deal with sellers in person when purchasing through social media.
