Fort Valley, Central State Brawl: 20 Players, Head Coaches Face 1-Game Suspensions

Twenty players and coaches were suspended and both programs fined after a postgame fight violated the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference code of ethics, the league said.

  • On October 4, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference suspended 20 student-athletes — nine from Fort Valley State University and 11 from Central State University — and fined both programs.
  • After a strong first quarter from Fort Valley State University, the Wildcats led 14-6 but trailed 14-12 at halftime after Travion Searcy blocked a field goal and returned it for the Marauders' go-ahead score.
  • Video of the altercation spread on social media less than 48 hours before the announcement, and the SIAC investigation team concluded both Fort Valley State University and Central State University communities violated the league's code of ethics.
  • As a result, one-game suspensions will sideline players and coaches for upcoming SIAC matchups, including Marlon Watson, Fort Valley State head coach, and Tony Carter, Central State head coach.
  • Earlier, Fort Valley suspended its Blue Machine Marching Band amid a hazing investigation that led to four arrests, and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy and promised stronger prevention efforts.
