2 Dead, 3 Hurt when Car Chased by Police Goes Off Washington State Ferry Dock
EDMONDS FERRY DOCK, WASHINGTON, JUN 18 – A high-speed chase ended with a Mini Cooper plunging into Puget Sound, killing two and injuring three, with the vehicle traveling over 100 mph, officials said.
- Late Tuesday night in Edmonds, a Mini Cooper involved in a police chase drove off the ferry terminal dock and submerged in 40 feet of water, killing two people and seriously injuring three others.
- The incident followed a failed stop attempt by a trooper who pursued the speeding Mini Cooper near milepost 189 on southbound Interstate 5 before the Snohomish County Sheriff's deputies continued the chase into Edmonds.
- Witnesses observed the car swerving through traffic before it drove onto the ferry dock, damaging the crossing arms and then plunging into the water, where three passengers were pulled out and transported to Harborview Medical Center.
- Trooper Kelsey Harding confirmed the car was traveling 79 mph in a 60 mph zone and that “the driver made no attempt to brake” before the crash, while crews towed the fully submerged vehicle out of the water around 3:30 a.m.
- The Washington State Patrol is investigating the cause, and ferry service, briefly deferred, resumed early Wednesday, indicating partial restoration after the accident disrupted operations.
