- The rankings rely on objective quality metrics such as C-section rates, newborn complication rates and exclusive breast milk feeding rates, based on data hospitals voluntarily submitted for evaluation.
- A record-breaking 901 hospitals submitted maternity data this year, with 405 hospitals named Best Hospitals and 147 awarded the Maternity Care Access Hospital designation.
- The ratings help expectant parents compare hospitals; `Choosing where to welcome a new baby is one of the most personal health care decisions a family makes,' said Jennifer Winston, Ph.D., and they can research at health.usnews.com.
- For the Maternity Care Access designation, hospitals must meet geographic and quality thresholds, including counties with fewer than 60 per 10,000 births or fewer than 128 providers within 15 miles, to serve underserved communities and prevent maternity care deserts.
