Bodies of 2 Children Found Inside Burning Car in San Antonio
Police say surveillance video, statements and scene evidence indicate Marlene Vidal was solely responsible, and investigators say mental health issues may have played a role.
- On Friday, San Antonio police charged 34-year-old Marlene Vidal with capital murder after discovering two children, ages 5 and 7, dead inside a burning vehicle in the 500 block of Richland Hills Drive.
- First responders discovered the vehicle between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. when a passerby walking a dog reported the fire and called 911; police identified Vidal at the scene and took her into custody.
- San Antonio Assistant Police Chief Jesse Salame said surveillance video and statements indicate Vidal was "solely responsible for the death of these two children," with authorities believing she acted alone.
- Authorities noted "indications that mental health issues may have played a role," Salame said. In Texas, a capital murder conviction carries either the death penalty or life without parole.
- "And I know our community is going to be hurting right now," Salame said, adding that "the why is sometimes the hardest question to answer" in this tragedy.
