Child Trapped, 11 Dead After Bus Overturns on Free State’s N1
- On Thursday night, a passenger bus traveling from Cape Town to Zimbabwe overturned near Trompsburg in the Free State, killing 12 people, including five children. Emergency services responded to the crash site, where 66 passengers sustained injuries.
- Free State health department spokesperson Mondli Mvambi reported the vehicle came to rest across the roadway, completely obstructing traffic. Emergency personnel conducted triage and extrication operations as rescue teams worked through the wreckage.
- Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed that of the 66 patients transported to medical facilities, 57 sustained minor injuries, four were critical, and five were in serious condition.
- Motorists traveling between Trompsburg and Edenburg have been urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, and expect significant delays as law enforcement officers manage traffic and assist emergency crews.
- The RTMC crash investigation team has been deployed to determine the cause of the accident. Mvambi extended condolences to the bereaved families and stated authorities will provide updates as more information becomes available.
