2 Colorado College Students Remain Missing After Hike, Search Continues
Authorities found a snow-collapsed tent with sleeping bags and a stove as about 60 volunteers searched for the missing Colorado Mountain College students.
On Tuesday, a helicopter crew searching for two missing college students spotted a collapsed tent near Lake Ann in Chaffee County. Search teams confirmed the gear belonged to hikers Kaden Matsuda and Jackson Donlon, though both remain missing.
Matsuda and Donlon, students at Colorado Mountain College Leadville, departed for a hike on Friday, October 23. Deputies launched an investigation on Monday after the pair failed to return, locating Matsuda's vehicle near the Mount Huron trailhead off County Road 390.
Investigators noted the tent showed no snowfall beneath it, suggesting the site was established before Saturday's heavy snowstorm. The area near Ice Mountain received up to 2 feet of snow, creating what deputies described as "horrific road conditions" around the county.
About 50 searchers from five counties returned to the field Tuesday, Chaffee County Sheriff Andy Rohrich reported. Crews utilized drones, helicopters, and infrared technology but found no human tracks or further signs of the students in fresh snow.
Authorities remain optimistic the men are hunkered down somewhere waiting to be rescued, though Rohrich warned the rescue window is closing due to poor weather expected later this week. Search teams are considering other potential destinations besides Ice Mountain.
