16-year-old boy charged in stabbing at Jasper Place High School

Police said the 16-year-old victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after an argument escalated at the school.

  • On Friday, April 10, Edmonton police charged a 16-year-old boy following a stabbing at Jasper Place High School near 89 Avenue and 163 Street. The suspect faces charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, and criminal harassment.
  • According to investigators, the stabbing followed a verbal argument between two 16-year-olds earlier that day. The victim reportedly attempted to walk away from the conversation before being stabbed, police said.
  • Several students attempted to restrain the attacker, who then fled the school. An EPS School Resource Officer and staff provided life-saving care until EMS arrived, while the building was placed on lockdown.
  • The injured student has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. Classes resumed at Jasper Place High School on Monday, where the Edmonton Public School Board provided critical incident support services.
  • Staff Sgt. Derek Onysko with the EPS Youth Integrated Services Section credited swift, unified actions of school staff and patrol members for restoring safety. "A dangerous situation was handled quickly and with care," he said.
