Teen Has 'Zero Brain Activity' After Viral TikTok Challenge
Doctors said the overdose can cause seizures and cardiac arrest, and the family plans to donate her organs.
On Tuesday, 15-year-old Leah Presson was declared brain dead after allegedly attempting the Benadryl Challenge, a viral trend involving excessive allergy medication consumption that triggered seizures and cardiac arrest.
The Benadryl Challenge encourages participants to ingest excessive medication to trigger hallucinations, a dose doctors warn can also cause seizures, cardiac arrest, and respiratory failure.
Leah's father, Richard Presson, said he is "still waiting on a miracle even though some have given up," while the family plans to donate her organs, potentially saving up to 90 lives.
Hospital staff have a 72-hour window before organ harvest. Dr. Ryan Brown warned parents to monitor children for warning signs, saying, "If your child is acting strange, look around."
While the Benadryl Challenge first emerged in 2020, renewed popularity in recent weeks has sparked concern; Richard Presson urged families to educate children, stating, "But these challenges are just silly, and they need to be educated.
The young woman's family said she would have participated in an alleged social media challenge related to the excessive consumption of an antihistamine.
