Residents evacuated as 125 firefighters called to 'serious' Walthamstow fire
Around 125 firefighters and 25 engines are tackling a blaze that has spread to gardens and outbuildings, officials said.
On Sunday, July 12, 2026, the London Fire Brigade deployed 25 engines and around 125 firefighters to a major railway embankment fire in Walthamstow near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street, reported shortly after 6pm.
The fire damaged a railway embankment, multiple outbuildings, and gardens of around 30 properties, prompting authorities to evacuate residents to two rest centres amid significant smoke.
Local MP Stella Creasy identified the incident as "an electrical fire on the train lines" and declared a major incident in Wood Street, urging residents to "Please avoid the Wood Street area for now."
The Weaver Overground line experienced partial closures with travellers advised to check Transport for London for updates; firefighters brought the blaze under control by 10.35pm.
Authorities confirmed no injuries were sustained, and while the cause remains under investigation, officials lifted previous window-closure advice with most evacuated residents expected to return home.
Residents have been evacuated and traffic chaos has ensued. Road closures are in place and rail services are partially disrupted as a result of the fire.
