Kier Lands £65m Manchester Airport Station Upgrade
The project includes platform extensions, track remodelling and signalling upgrades to boost capacity and reliability, Network Rail said.
Network Rail awarded contractor Kier a £65m contract to extend Platforms 1, 2, and 3 at Manchester Airport station. The work includes track remodelling and signalling upgrades to be completed by 2028.
This project is part of the wider Manchester Rail Upgrade, designed to improve service reliability and capacity across the North West. Officials stated the investment will allow longer, more frequent trains to serve the transport hub.
On Sunday, December 6, 2026, Manchester Airport station will close completely for one day. Engineers will use this 24-hour closure to install a utility bridge across the tracks to house electrical cabling.
Following the cabling installation, a bridge used by Manchester Airport Group will be removed at Easter 2027. Replacement buses will operate between Wilmslow and the airport during the closure, with a new bridge constructed later that year.
Rail Minister Lord Hendy said the £115 million investment will deliver more reliable services for millions of passengers annually. The improvements are intended to support ongoing growth and strengthen the airport's role as an international gateway.
