Rail disruption after overhead line fault
Engineers are repairing 25,000-volt overhead wires as Avanti West Coast warns of delays, cancellations and rail replacement buses across the route.
On Saturday, October 10, 2026, damage to 25,000-volt overhead electric wires near Penkridge blocked all lines, causing major rail disruption between Stafford and Birmingham New Street.
Adam Checkley, engineering director for Network Rail Central, said disruption would "likely throughout the day" as engineers worked on-site at Four Ashes to repair the damaged equipment.
London Northwestern Railway services between Liverpool Lime Street and Birmingham remain cancelled, while Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry routes face significant delays across the region.
National Rail Enquiries urges travelers to check before departing, as ticket acceptance is active on Transport for Wales, East Coast Main Line, and Midland Main Line services.
Replacement buses operate between Stafford and Wolverhampton as crews work to restore full service on the West Coast Main Line following the overhead wire fault.
