Family Heirloom Found to Be Unspent WWI Artillery Shell Prompts Emergency Response
The shell had been kept as a family heirloom and required trained explosive ordnance personnel, with no injuries reported, officials said.
On Wednesday, October 14, an unspent World War I artillery shell was discovered at a residence on Keep Avenue in Paxton, Massachusetts, prompting an emergency response.
The homeowner discovered the approximately 110-year-old shell, which had been passed down as a family heirloom from their grandfather, and immediately contacted the Massachusetts State Police after realizing the hazard.
Explosive ordnance personnel assessed the relic, which the Paxton Fire Department noted "presented a serious risk within the home and required specialized handling by trained explosive ordnance personnel."
Coordinating with local and military personnel from Westover Air Reserve Base, Massachusetts State Police transported the shell to Devens, where it was destroyed under controlled conditions on Wednesday.
Officials remind the public not to touch any old military munitions or suspicious items they encounter and to call 911 immediately for safe disposal guidance.
