Ghana's Military Hunts Those Behind Convoy Attack on Northern Highway
Soldiers repelled the ambush and recovered weapons as ten suspects were arrested in an area long affected by ethnic violence.
- A military-escorted civilian convoy transporting about 140 people from Bawku to Bolgatanga came under fire in Binduri on Monday. The Ghana Armed Forces reported three civilians died and one was injured during the attack in the Upper East Region.
- The violence stems from a decades-long conflict in Bawku, where chieftaincy disputes between Kusasi and Mamprusi groups frequently trigger clashes. Despite government mediation, the region remains one of Ghana's most persistent security flashpoints.
- Soldiers repelled the assailants during the skirmish. Troops later recovered a locally made weapon, two filled magazines, and ammunition from one suspect who fled to a mosque.
- Ten suspects have since been arrested and are currently assisting with ongoing investigations, according to the military. The Ghana Armed Forces cautioned the public against interfering with security operations.
- The conflict has resulted in more than 300 casualties since 2021, spreading from Bawku into neighbouring Binduri Township. Ghana's Interior Ministry previously imposed a nightly curfew on the area to address rising instability.
