Seven victims remain in intensive care after a cooking gas cylinder exploded as neighbors tried to douse a house fire, police said.

- The incident began Wednesday night when a fire engulfed the thatched home of farmer Murugayan; neighbors rushed to assist, unaware a cooking cylinder remained inside the structure.
- Local resident Durgadevi told PTI, "No one knew a cylinder was inside, and it suddenly exploded," as some victims sustained burns covering more than 80 per cent of their bodies.
- Three other victims received treatment at Pattukottai Government Hospital, while security personnel were deployed at Thanjavur Medical College Hospital's emergency ward to manage the influx of relatives.
- Thiruvonam police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the blaze's cause, as officials continue to monitor the critically injured patients under intensive medical care.
